Tony,
Very glad we were able to help.
On the subject of whether there was a shop or Robert was a "travelling man",
I would hazard a guess that they lived above the shop in Broad Street. A
look at the "neighbors" in the 1881 Census shows many other shops and hotels
with the proprietors living on the premises. I believe I know just the
block in which their shop was located.
Have you ever found out where Mary's birthplace, "Gwernbuarth", was? If it
was in a different registration district, that may be where you'll find
their marriage certificate.
As for Sarah/Sallie & William meeting, it wouldn't be unusual for a draper
and his assistant to regularly visit Shrewsbury on business. Likewise,
Newtown was a good-sized market town so William may have come to Newtown and
met her there. (You didn't mention what type of business the Hudson's were
in.)
Incidentally, I think you missed a child of Robert & Mary's -- there's a
young (17) Robert E. Goodwin lodging in Back Lane, Newtown, Draper's
Assistant.
Regards,
Julie Preston

Subject: [POWYS] Hudson-Goodwin
Thanks to Julie,Em,Denis and Mrs.Hazel Bolton at the Registrar's
in
Newtown I
have made some progress with regard to the Hudson-Goodwin marriage.
The announcement read :
Hudson -
Goodwin
On the 17th of
January
1884, at St.David's Church,
Newtown, by the
Rev.J.Williams,
Mr.William Hudson
of
Shrewsbury
to Sallie,eldest daughter
of
Robert Goodwin, Newtown.
Sallie is mentioned in the 1881 census as Sarah
A.P.Goodwin
aged 20. The birth certificate gives her full names as Sarah Ann
Pryce,
daughter of Robert Goodwin and Mary Goodwin, formerly Pryce. There is no
marriage
certificate for Robert and Mary.
Robert was a draper in Newtown. The address on Sarah's
certificate is Bridge Street, but the 1881 census gives the address as
Broad
Street. He was a draper employing two men and a boy. Will there have
been
a shop
or was he a travelling man, I wonder ?
There seems to be no mention of any of the family in
the
1901 census. Sarah/Sallie is of course by now a Hudson on the census,
but
I
wonder what happened to Robert and Mary, and their other children
Mary,
John,
William, Richard and Margaret.
I now have more information on the Hudsons who came
from
the Frankwell area of Shrewsbury in the Parish of St.Chad. I wonder
how
William
and Sallie met !
Thanks again for
all
the help - Tony
