Does anyone know anything about this place, please? Is it a district, a farm
or a house? My Howell Lewis died there aged 55 years in 1817. I am still
trying to locate his marriage to a Sarah around 1785 and his baptism around
1762.
Sarah Lewis his wife died 7th February 1838 at Penyrhewl aged 78 years. Anne
Lewis one of their daughter's was buried on 22nd July 1838 at Boughrood aged
36 years. The place name is a slightly different spelling of the place where
Sarah died, Penyrheol. Does anyone know anything about this place too?
====================
Dear Heather,
"Breast-Bach" near Boughrood, Radnorshire, is at grid reference
314698,238630 about 1¼ miles east of Boughrood village. On the modern
Ordnance Survey Outdoor Leisure map (sheet 13) it's called "Boughrood
Brest"
but on the 1889 map on the Old Maps website, it's identified as
"Breast-bach". On the 1881 census there appear to be 10 households living at
"Breast, Boughrood" suggesting it is a hamlet. One of the households is a
LEWIS family headed by Henry LEWIS , aged 53, a stonemason.
I think your "Penyrhewl" is a misspelling of Pen-yr-heol which is shown on
the modern map and the old map at grid reference 314758,239387 about a half
mile north of Breast-bach. In 1881, two households lived at "Penyroel"
[sic] -- a BLYNEY family and a POWELL family.
The highly detailed (1:10,560-scale) late 19th century map of this area is
available on the Old Maps website at
http://www.old-maps.co.uk/
On the main page, select the "Co-ordinates" option in the search facility
(near top left of the page). In the search field enter the co-ordinates
314698,238630 (without any spaces) and click the Search button. Choose the
Brecknockshire option which is presented.
When the small map appears, click on the "Enlarged view" button below the
map. A highly detailed large map of the area will open in a new window,
centred on Breast-bach.
To locate Pen-yr-heol, repeat the process using the co-ordinates
314758,239387
You can save the enlarged view maps to your hard disc by clicking on the map
with your right mouse button and selecting the "Save Picture As..." option
in the menu which appears.
Kind regards,
John
