Dear Ruth & Glenys,
You are brilliant! I think you have confirmed what I half-suspected.
Baby Nelly Loder b.Clapham is in the care in 1881 of two nurses born in
Somerset.
So that's explains why my 99 year old aunt thought Maria Loader/Loder came
from Somerset/WestCountry, but had no idea where she got the idea.
And strangely, you found a Mary Loader 21 with a child Ellen aged 2 in
1881 in Horton, Dorset, married to a Clement Loader 24, Ag.Lab. - RG11
2091/16 p5. Isn't Horton, Dorset about 30 miles from the Somerset border?
Might it be possible for Mary/Maria age 21 and Ellen/Nelly age 2 to be in
two places on 3rd April 1881?
The proof of this being just a strange coincidence will be the
birth/baptism of a Nelly/Nellie/Ellen Louise in Clapham/N.Wandsworth in
1879 and/or a Maria Loader in Limehouse/Bow, London about 1860.
I don't think my Mum would have known if her 'aunty Nell' used Ashton or
Loader/Loder before marriage. Nell was probably married before my mother
was born - to Charlie Wood, a London 'turf accountant' with a Rolls-Royce!
Mum was very fond of 'aunty Nell' and often wrote to her.
Regarding the strangely written G in George and the S in Son, I
understand what Glenys is saying but I'm not absolutely convinced. But it
is the best idea and would certainly make it easier to understand how
'Daniel S' later became George and 'Maglona S' later became Gwen. Another
strange thing about this is that family believe that Gwen just picked this
name herself because she hated 'Maglona'. Perhaps, if Gwen had no
birth/baptism certificate to say she was Maglona G. __?__, she may have
believed she had picked it for herself in early childhood.
Many thanks to you all for all the data and ideas you have found.
Sorry this reply was slow. Roofing problems took priority!
Cheers, Tony

Hi Tony & Listers
I think I may have found the first child of Maria Ashton (nee Loader) in
1881. The household is as follows:
Sarah Rogers Head W 74 b Somerset Nurse (Suv)
Louise Sharp Dau M 30 b Somerset Nurse (Suv)
Nelly Loder Nurse child 2 b Clapham
They were at 18 Cross Street, Battersea, London. RG11 0653/26 45
The 1891 census shows Nelly as aged 12 - which fits - & born in Wandsworth -
which like Clapham & Battersea is South of the river and the discrepancy in
stated birthplace is no worse than Chelsea/Pimlico & Limehouse/Bow. I don't
know what Suv means but it may be a transcription error for Serv.
I see that in 1891 Nelly was known as ASHTON
- do you know if she normally used that name?
From the 1891 census one would not know that she wasn't Daniel A's child.
To me it looks as though D & Maria each had a child when they met as there is
such a gap after Maglona to make me doubt that she is Maria's child.
(Perhaps her mother - maybe Maglona Lewis - died in childbirth or soon after,
& D called for help from the Jones ladies from Machynlleth??)
Probably we shall never know unless a birth certificate or baptism turns up.
Thanks to Anna for putting me right about Barrett Street. I am not entirely
sure that in my mind I wasn't mixing up the location of Wimpole Street with
Wigmore Street anyway - so it's good to know there was a Barrett Street.
Best regards, Ruth

Anthony & Ruth
Looking at the facsimile of the census returns, both Daniel and Maglona
have the same symbol immediately after their first names - nothing to do
with son or
single. The symbol is ambiguous but is a G in both instances - a G
written like
the proper loopy G but without the up stroke and without finishing the loop in
the tail. There is a George at the bottom of the page that shows this
eccentricity clearly.
Hope this helps

Glenys
