Hi Clive
Sorry to hear of your parents' house troubles. Sounds like the saga will
run and run yet awhile. We moved to a house with Artex ceilings in every
room - but had them all replastered before moving in!
Thanks for your Pruett information. There is a strong Geographical overlap
with our Prewetts. I must investigate further in the Abertillery and
Brynmawr areas - and their Bristol, Glos and Somerset connections.
Thank you for your reply.
Regards
David Lloyd

Hi David
Thanks for your reply.
I've been away from Welsh history matters for a couple of days cleaning
and restoring bagged-up items from my parents' house on the south coast,
which suffered a severe flood from the roof downwards in early March - as a
result of the 'Siberian' winter freeze. Although the collapsed Artex
ceilings (in every room bar one) have finally been shown to be
asbestos-free (thank goodness), the extreme damp and summer heat have not
since proved a happy combination. And we're still waiting for the
building's insurers to answer our appeal, against their wheedling out of
the claim on a technicality, positively and act . . .
Yes, there is a certainly a link-up between the surnames 'Prewet' and
'Pruett', for both Richard Pruett jnr's eldest surviving daughter,
Elizabeth (b.1838), and only son, Richard (1839-40), who died within three
months, were both registered in the original GRO Indexes, as presented by
FreeBMD, under the surname 'Prewet'. I confirmed the connection through
Elizabeth's appearance and age in successive censuses and by checking the
General Register Office's new online index (very helpful), which provides
the mother's maiden name for all births, with 'Hall' being given for the
two births in the Pontypool district - the correct name and area.
However, after these entries between 1838-40, from 1841 onwards the
correct 'Pruett' surname has been used for all future births and deaths.
The Richard Pruett snr I have been following became a master mason and
built the canal basin at Brecon for the Brecknock & Abergavenny Canal Co.
Ltd. He continued doing work for the canal company over the years and his
son, Richard jnr, went on to carry out maintenance and repairs for the
company during its later years. I've just downloaded today the father's
death certificate in PDF form from the GRO and it looks like he died aged
80 in January 1857 at the Llanelly Wharf on the Brecon & Abergavenny Canal
- certainly at Gilwern.
I haven't found any wider local (South Wales) links in the earlier family
connections since Richard Pruett snr originated from 'Portbury' in
Somerset. He had three sons, John Pruett (b.1800/01), who was a canal
agent, Richard Pruett jnr (b.1806/7), mason (as above), and also William
Pruett (b. circa 1815/16), a mason; plus two daughters, Mary (b.1808/9),
who married Job Jones at Llanwenarth on 23rd September 1833, and Sarah (b.
circa 1820/21).
It could be that one or other of the sons had descendants who may be
related to your line, but this is as far as I have researched to date.
Best regards
Clive Gardener
