Thank you, Lynne. You described accurately the challenge I'm facing. :-) I'll
just do the best I can.
Yours,
Venita

Briefly looking thru the Vaynor christenings (Batch Number C081511) on
Family Search, it looks like there are a combination of patronymics and
adopted surnames. For example,
John Anthony, c. 13 Jul 1808, the son of Anthony Morgan.
John Anthony, c. 13 Nov 1822, the son of Griffith Anthony and Margaret.
There are 1,686 christening records from 1751 to 1841 in this Batch that
have been transcribed:

I have no idea what the original parish records looks like. This is merely
the way the records were transcribed by the LDS. The original probably
says, John the son of Anthony Morgan was christened 13 July 1808. He could
have used any surname later in life. But, when transcribing, the LDS
assigned him a surname - in this case Anthony.

Subject: Re: [POWYS] Patronymics in Vaynor?
Thanks for you input, John and Lynne. The Vaynor extractions I'm looking at
were done by the Glamorgan Genealogy Society and published on a CD in 2003.
I have that CD.
I just finished checking my data from Myddfai, Carms, and found several
errors I had made earlier related to patronymics, which were alive and
thriving there, even after 1813 in some cases. I'm on the verge of doing
the same thing with my Vaynor data, and hoping for a 'rule of thumb' to
guide me. It appears that the rule will be to assume patronymics were used.
I wonder if the location of Vaynor, being next to Merthyr Tydfil, would have
any effect on the situation. Was Merthyr a big enough town to have dropped
patronymics early? My people lived in Cefn Coed y Cymmer, mostly - at least
as far back as there are Vaynor records.
Your with much appreciation,
Venita
