Dear Pamela,
The Powys Digital History Project has a descriptions of Betws Cedewain
village as it was in 1839 and in 1903, including contemporary maps of the
village (see
http://history.powys.org.uk/school1/newtown/betmap.shtml). The
1839 map is from the tithe map, but doesn't identify the inns or public
houses by name. However the accompanying text states "The village had 2
inns - the New Inn and the Talbot Inn." There is no mention of the Red Lion,
so maybe it was omitted because it was a public house rather than an inn?
The 1861 and 1871 censuses for the township of Ucheldre are more
illuminating, see below:
1861 Census (RG9/4252)
- shows Evan Jones (71) and his wife Mary (71) at "Village Lion Inn", in the
village of Bettws Cedewain. Evan is described as a "Publican, Blacksmith,
Farrier", and Mary as "Publican's wife". Living with them is their
grandson
Thomas Morgan (20), "Blacksmith" (see Schedule 32, Folio 6, Page 6). I'm
sure the Lion Inn is what you know as the Red Lion.
1871 Census (RG/5617)
- shows Mary Jones (80), widow, described as "Innkeeper". Her address is
given only as "Village", but the other two inns are identified separately as
Talbot Inn and New Inn, so she is probably at the property described 10
years earlier as "Village Lion Inn".
Regarding your second query, about a farm called "Freed". This an anglicised
spelling of "Frydd" or probably more correctly "Ffrydd".
Frydd is included in both the 1861 and the 1871 censuses.
In 1861 (RG9/4252 Folio 9 Page 11, Schedules 63, 63, 65) there are three
properties in Ucheldre township identified as "Brookes Frydd". All three are
occupied by shoemakers and their families.
In 1871 (RG/5617 Folio 5 Page 2 and Folio 6 Page 3, Schedules 8 and 9) there
are two households in a property in Ucheldre township identified as "Frydd".
One is occupied by a shoemaker and his family, the other is occupied by a
"Wheelwright occupying 6½ acres of land".
On the censuses, "Frydd" is enumerated near "Mount Pleasant",
"Newhouse",
and "Penyffwdan".
On modern maps of the area, Brooks and New House are situated a mile or so
northeast of the village of Bettws Cedewain, The Ordnance Survey 1:25,000
scale 'Explorer' map shows a farm/property called "Penyfridd" at grid
reference 313683,298950. I suspect Pen-y-fridd was near "Frydd".
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=313745&Y=299002&A=Y&Z=115 links
directly to the OS Explorer map, centred on Penyfridd. Brroks and New House
are to the northeast of Penyfridd.
I hope this will give you some idea of the relative locations of the places
you've mentioned.
Kind regards,
John

Subject: [POWYS] MGY Red Lion Inn at Bettws Cedewain
Hi
I'd like help in locating the Red Lion inn in Bettws village. I know
it's not still operating but is the building still standing? I read an
undated article that said it became the post office and general store -
but I don't know if that is current now, and I also don't know where the
PO is. I'd like to be able to locate it and see it on google maps.
In the will of Evan JONES, blacksmith and innkeeper, (written 1864,
d.1866) it says "...all that my Public House called the Red Lion with
the Smithy, Stabling, and appurtenances thereto belonging situate in the
Village of Bettws..." Was the smithy attached/next to the inn? I see
there is a building called "Old Smithy" in Bettws village, would this
have been his smithy?
regards, Pamela
