It does help, Alun, as it shows that the (Red) Lion Inn had long
disappeared. Thank you.
I think it was also of short duration - possibly only from 1840s-1870s.

Dear Pamela,
I grew up in the area you refer to and know it well. There is no Red Lion in
Bettws and never has been to my knowledge going back before the second world
war. The pub there is known as the New Inn. There is a Red Lion in the
adjacent village of Berriew (about 5 miles away). The Smithy (black & white,
half timbered building) in Bettws Cedewain (to give the village its full
name) was on the other side of the road to the pub(New Inn) situated on the
river bank and just on the road that branches off to Berriew village. The
main road through Bettws Cedewain makes a right turn over the bridge, just
opposite the New Inn, which is a focal point of the village.
I hope that helps.
