Hi Gareth
Out of interest, there is just one birth for a William James listed in the
Brecknock district during the period concerned:
MAR 1850 William James Brecknock Vol. 26 Page 270
Llanfihangel Tal-y-Llyn births would originally have been registered at the
Brecknock Registry Office and the records were transferred to the Powys
Register Office in 1974. E-mail: family.history.certificates(a)powys.gov.uk
So, I think it would be worth having the above birth checked out first to
see whether the mother matches, through the Powys Register Office - as
suggested by Mary. The Crickhowell Union Workhouse would have taken up
people from the surrounding district, as well as locals, rather than that
the inmates necessarily previously lived in Crickhowell.
Best regards

Hi Gareth,
Have you tried sending for the birth certificate of either of the two
'William Jones James' whose births are registered in Crickhowell
registration district in the March quarter of 1850? The Crickhowell district
covers Llangattock where your William is recorded as being born and I've
seen quite a few instances of a putative father's surname being included as
a child's middle name.
Maybe the 'Jones' got dropped when the father didn't do the right thing.

I´m trying to fill in gaps in the life of my Great Great Grandma Rebecca
James. So far I know that she was born in Cwmdu, Breconshire in about 1825,
but I don´t know who her parents or siblings, if any, were. On the 1841
census she is a servant in the house of William Stephens, a wheelwright, in
Llanfihangel Talyllyn, but in 1851 she and her 1 year old son William James
are found as pauper inmates of the Union Workhouse in Crickhowell. Her
occupation is described as "formerly House Servant" so maybe she was
dismissed because she was pregnant? I can´t find a birth entry for this
William so can´t ask for a birth certificate, but presumably the father´s
name will be blank anyway. In 1852 she married my Great Great Grandfather
Thomas Williams of Crickadarn (born about 1832) and in 1861 their address is
Pond Row, Llangattock .He accepts William as a stepson so he wasn´t the
father, I guess. They had further children including my Great Grandma Ann(e)
Williams. All and any info gratefully accepted!
