Hi Listers,
Like many who started their family history research a generation ago, I have
a great affection for PAF.
I've been running it on successive computers ever since I installed it on my
first real computer (an Amstrad PCW8512) in the mid 1980s. However, it
hasn't been my first choice family history program since the mid 1990s, when
I acquired Family Tree Maker (FTM).
Today, I have several family history programs installed on my current PC,
running under Windows 7: PAF (version 5), FTM 13, Generations 8.5, and
Family Historian 5.
For the past decade, my program of choice has been Family Historian (FH),
which I've operated through its various updates since it first came out. The
latest version is 5.0.9. Unlike some of the other programs, FH does not have
a search facility integrated into Ancestry's databases. However, I think FH
is better suited to British family history research than some of the
US-based programs.
Download a free trial version of FH at:
http://www.family-historian.co.uk/
Some folks rely entirely on online genealogy organisation and storage
facilities offered by companies such as Ancestry.co.uk
Go to the homepage at
http://home.ancestry.co.uk/ and from the 'Family
Trees' drop-down menu, select either "Start a new tree" (if you want to
start from scratch) or 'Upload a GEDCOM' if you want to upload an existing
file.
Choosing a family history program is very personal matter, so my advice is
to download and try out free trial versions of several programs and see
which one you like best.
Kind regards,
John

Subject: [POWYS] PAF is going away
Hello All,
I have been using PAF for the last 20 years and now it is going away. It
looks like I will be switching to a new program. Any suggestions for a new
program?? Anyone have any experience with Ancestral Quest, Legacy Family
tree, or RootsMagic???
Any insight will be appreciated.
