Hi Mary
Yes I was disappointed but it was worth a try. I shall just keep searching and I will be
sure to let you know when I find him one day..............
Many thanks for your advice and interest all much appreciated.

Hi Shirley,
How disappointing for you that the Trinity House admissions, the nominations or
the election vouchers do not give a place of birth for James. The answer to the
born in county question in 1841 is known to be more unreliable than the parish
of birth question in subsequent censuses: a 'yes' answer in 1841 can change to
a parish in another county in 1851. James living in a local charity almshouse
may not have wanted to admit being from another county, or he may have lived in
Shropshire so long that he felt he belonged to that county, or he just did not
remember living elsewhere when very young. I would not narrow the search to
Shropshire at this stage.
Good luck
Mary

Hello list
First of all my sincere apologies ~ the list had a malicious email from my email
address on 29 April
I was hacked ~ 70 emails had been sent altogether NOT from me though. Passwords
changed etc. so all good at the moment, sorry for the inconvenience.
I have heard back from Shropshire Archives regarding the possibility of Trinity
Hospital Records having a date of birth or place of birth for their inhibitants
but this was their response:
=====
I have looked at the Trinity Hospital records, we hold a register of
admittances and vouchers of nominations of almsmen. Unfortunately, neither state
where an almsman was born, but the election vouchers do state which town/area
they have lived in for five years. I have already checked the admittance
register and the entries tail off about 1840 and your ancestor is not included.
If you wanted a search for his nomination it would take one hours research time
as the nominations are separated into several areas.
=======
Does the list agree I would not gain anything from this research as I have James
on the 1841 census living at Trinity Hospital Clun and he died in 1845. He says
Yes to being born in the County.
Thank you all for your interest.
Best wishes Shirley

Hi Shirley,
Trinity Hospital does not seem to have been only for those born in Shropshire
county unless there were different rules at different times. I have in my tree
William Greenwood born in Llanbister, Radnorshirewho died at Trinity Hospital in
1871 and was buried back in the family plot in Llanbister. In 1861 he was
working on his son-in-law's farm at Treverward and that is his Shropshire
connection. My note about Trinity Hospital is that it was "charitable
accommodation for 12 men of good character".
Best wishes,
Mary

Hi Sue
Thank you for your suggestions ~ I think the main reason I am looking in
Shropshire is that James died at Trinity Hospital in Clun and they are Alms
houses. I was told that to be resident there you would need to have been born in
the village or county, perhaps someone on the list can confirm if that is the
case?
The names of their children may have derived from James's parents i.e. James
born 1791, John 1792, Richard 1795, William 1797 (my direct ancestor), Thomas
1799 and Mary 1802. Margaret's parent's were John and Elinor Corns I haven't
been able to go any further up that branch yet.
We do have to keep open minded so I will certainly further into your suggestions
Sue, thank you.
Kind regards
Shirley

Hi Shirley
Have you considered searching beyond Shropshire - there are a few baptisms
recorded in the Chester diocese - the dates are a bit out but might be worth
investigating to see if you can find other Staleys/Stayleys. Also, Chester is
not that far away from Shropshire.
James Stayley son of Edward. December 22 1751. St Michael, Macclesfield. (Abode
given as Upton, Hereford)
James Stayley son of James and Elizabeth. February 15th 1785. St Michael,
Macclesfield (Abode given as Sutton)
There are also a couple of wills in the Chester archives - James Staley of
Macclesfield Park. 1759
and James Stayley of Buglawton. 1783
hope this might be of help.
Sue

Dear List
One of my brickwalls is my 4xGr Grandfather James Staley born abt 1767 I cannot
find where he was born, can anyone help please? James married Margaret Corns 20
Jun 1790 Lydbury North. Margaret was born 8 Jan 1769 in Lydbury North. James
died on 1 Jun 1845 in Trinity Hospital, Clun. All six of their children were
born in Lydbury North. I have searched at the Archive Office in Shrewsbury the
following places for James' birth:
Bishops Castle, Clungunford, Ludlow, Petton, Pontesbury, Westbury, Worthen,
Ratlinghope, Chirbury, Smethcote.
I have particular interest in researching this branch of my family as I have
'inherited' the Staley name as a middle name. Any help would be much
appreciated.
Kind regards
Shirley (Frost)
