Dear John
If you're having problems with everything slowing down to snail's pace in
Firefox and Chrome browsers then I can recommend going into the
<Tools><Add-ons> window and disabling everything in sight - as far as
possible. Flash Player is especially bad on my computer and I only enable it
when I want to play a video. Likewise, with pretty much all the other
add-ons and extensions.
This should help avoid the 'not responding' hang-ups, in most instances.
I think the viruses that get past firewalls use the add-ons to run unwanted
programs on people's computers. If you use OpenOffice you can close down the
Java add-ons in the browser(s) without any problems when you're using the
suite of programs outside and this also stops certain malware from
installing itself and operating on your computer.
In addition, when you update Java, the older versions are still left behind,
loaded up. So, going into the <Add or Remove Programs> function it would be
worth looking for and deleting versions of Java other than the most recent.
There are warnings that this may be a problem for certain users doing more
sophisticated programming with Java, but I've not had a problem myself, so
far as the standard OpenOffice routines are concerned.
(Apparently the International Space Station is now using Linux for running
its computer systems, for similar reasons:

)
I hope this helps!
Best regards

Subject: [POWYS] cymru1900wales website
Dear Listers,
I returned to the
www.cymru1900wales.org website this morning after a
week's
break from transcribing place-names.
I was pleased to see that tags for all the transcriptions I'd previously
done in and around Brecon are now shown (in green!) on the publicly
viewable
map.
However, when I went to the city of Swansea, there were so many densely
packed grey tags that the map itself is barely visible at the default zoom
level. And even worse, the map takes ages to refresh itself if I attempt
to
recentre the map or to zoom in or out. My web browsers (Firefox and
Chrome)
go into 'not responding' mode.
I suspect there is a fault in the scripting employed by the website design
team
Can anyone else try visiting Swansea on the
cymru1900wales.org website to
confirm it's not only me encountering this problem?
I'm reporting my experience to the website's contact person (it was Tom
Pert
last week).
Kind regards,
John
