Hi Charles and Julie..
I have recently discovered that some of my early ancestors were Quakers too
so I have an interest in this topic.
According to the Society of Geneologist's booklet "My ancestors were
Quakers"
the origins of Quakerism arose in the East Midlands in the late 1640's, so I
wonder if Rees Prees was a Quaker when he migrated to Pennsylvannia
(1648),or was converted later ie were there any Quakers around in Wales as
early as this time?
This booklet also lists a number of American sources of information, which
you may already know...
Libraries
The Quaker collection, Haverford College Library (Haverford PA 19041) tel

Friends Historical Library, Swarthmore College, 9500 College
Avenue,Swarthmore PA 19081-1399 tel 001 215 328 8496
There are also references to publications, which may be relevant to your
research via contact with the above libraries.
According to the booklet, emigration to North America started c 1655 - 1662
when about 60 Quaker missionaires arrived in the new world with the main
centres of activity being New England,New Amsterdam,Long Island,Maryland,
Virginia.
There's a CD version of the Encyclopedia of Quaker Genealogy 7 vols pub
1936-70
covering various US states, and a book by T. Mardy Rees "Quakers in Wales"
(1925),listing some emigrants from Wales
Hope this may help - but I'm still a newbie as far as Quakers are concerned!

Charles,
We don't get many discussions about Quakers (Society of Friends) but I'm
hoping, by changing the subject line for your message, that someone else
with experience tracing Quaker ancestors might chime in here.
Meanwhile, it's interesting that your ancestor emigrated from Wales in
1668 -- it seems to be the same year the Quaker movement spread to Wales so
he must've become a Quaker and left almost immediately!
I've gone through some early Powys Family History Society issues of their
journal, "Cronicl" and found a few articles -- the main gist is that the
Society of Friends' registers were handed over to the government and date
back to 1668 -- before the handover, "Digests" of the registers were made by
the Quakers and these have all been microfilmed by the LDS. This is likely
the only place you'll find any mention of your ancestor but it may be very
informative (i.e., detailed) -- not knowing from where in Radnorshire he
came, you'll have to look at any/all digests pertaining to Radnorshire but
the LDS catalogue should be able to help find the correct microfilms. If
you get a parish and/or farm name, it would be most helpful.
Also, there have been some publications about the Quakers if you can track
down any of these, mentioned under "Religion" on the GENUKI pages for Wales
and for Radnorshire, specifically:
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal
Macpherson, Trevor. Friends in Radnorshire : a brief history of the Quakers.
Llandrindod Wells : Verzon Books, 1999. 77p
Phillips, H D. Early Quakers in Wales. 1912. 20pp
Rees, T Mardy. A History of the Quakers in Wales and their Emigration to
North America. Spurrel, 1925
-------------------------------
There's been quite a lot written about the early Quakers in America -- have
you consulted all available county histories, town histories, and Quaker
records for the area where Rees Prees (comes from Rees ap [son of] Rees,
drop the 'a' -- turns into "Prees") settled?
I've seen prior mentions of the ship, the "Vine", on this or other lists --
perhaps going through the list archives might produce some previous
discussions on the subject that could help you.
Kind regards,
Julie Preston

I am new to this list. My direct ancestor was a Rees Prees. A Quaker who
arrived in Pennsylvania in 1648. The passenger manifest for his ship (Vine)
listed his home as Radnorshire.
