If only I had those certificates!
I have a tiny slice of my great-grandfather's history - his year and place
of birth, his father's name, the 1871 census, his marriage and some details
of his children.
Nothing after 1877 and nothing between his placement as a nurse baby (1851
census) and 1871.
One day a seemingly insignificant item will come my way and that will unlock
the mystery.
In the meantime, I'll keep searching.
Regards,
Marion.

If the baptism certificate has survived it will say who was present,
who
the
godparents were, and more. If you have the date of baptism you could try
the
archives.

Ellie

that the child was named in honor of someone they knew and/or admired -
perhaps the man you found, Ruth. The departure from the classic naming
pattern for children becomes more prevalent when people ventured far from
home and made new friends and 'family' in their new home. I don't know
how
one can prove whether a father was present at the christening but he may
be
shown on the birth certificate as the 'Informant' at the time of
registration.
