Hi Barrie,
Thank you very much for helping to fill in more 1901 details of my 19
year old grandmother, Maglona Gwen Ashton, curiously described as a niece
to 90 year old Rees Jones, and milliner, perhaps working with Jane & Anne
Jones who had looked after her on & off since infancy. My uncle in
Caernarfon reminded me that one of these ladies, perhaps Jane, accompanied
Maglona's family to Caernarfon about 1920 after she married Owen Roberts
about 1904. It will be interesting to see the 1921 census and also whether
it included the family parrot!
It will be very interesting to find out if 90 year old Rhys Jones born
Llanbrynmair about 1811 is related to 70 year old John Ashton's mother Anne
Jones born Llanbrynmair about 1800, thus making Maglona a great/grand-niece
of Rhys.
It's interesting to see John Caradoc Ashton working as a schoolmaster at
age 27, presumably while studying to later become the town doctor.
Isn't it rather unusual for a census to list only the initials of a
resident, like MJR Ashton née Morgan born Darowen about 1874 and whose
husband is absent.
Thank you for including Dick Williams's website. It is indeed very
interesting, with delightful country photos:

While checking my wife's Powys FHS publication transcription of
Machynlleth 1901 census, I came across Maglona Ashton at Maengwyn
Street.
JONES Rees h w 90 MGY Llanbrynmair
JONES Jane d s 59 dressmaker MGY Llanbrynmair
JONES Anne d s 48 milliner MGY Llanbrynmair
ASHTON Maglona Gwen? ni s 19 milliner LND
MORGAN Osborne h s 37 tailor CHS Birkenhead
ASHTON M J R st m 27 MGY Darowen
GRIFFITHS Elizabeth sv s 26 gen servant MGY Llanbrynmair
h=head, d= daughter, ni= niece, st= sister, sv= servant, w= widow or
widower, LND= London
I know that Ruth (Hayward), I think, found this earlier. Strangely
enough there is a Maglona Villas and a few females in the area have the
name of Maglona.
Dick Williams of Gloucester mentioned the Roman settlement, etc. back in
a post on Powys list in 2000.
Dick's website is now at:-
http://website.lineone.net/~rkwilli/
In Dick's words:-
"The following pages are entirely devoted to Machynlleth,
Montgomeryshire (Powys) and the Dyfi Valley and its tributaries, from
the source of the river way up on Aran Fawddwy right down to the estuary
at Aberdyfi and Ynyslas/Borth.
I've been researching and visiting locations regularly since the summer
of 2000, and am gradually assembling new sections as I discover more
about the area - I hope it meets with your approval."
The website is well worth a visit!
Incidentally, also at Maengwyn Street is:-
ASHTON John h m 70 shoemaker MGY Llanbrynmair
ASHTON Margaret w m 67 MGY Dolgelley
