Dear Ruth,
They were possibly the Bristol Ashton's. I get a lot of queries from
Bristol area Ashton's. The ones that Anthony, Gwyneth, Margaret, Alison
and myself are researching are the ones that came from Derbyshire in
1500's.
As Gwyneth points out in Cronicl No. 55 " An article in the "County
Times" of 23rd November 1991 states 'The Ashton family has lived
continuously in the Parish (Trefeglwys) for 400 years since a grant was
given by Queen Elizabeth 1 to a border farmer George Ashton, to improve
farming in the area. The family home for 3 centuries was at Geseilfa,
Llawryglyn; crown land previously owned by Haughmond Abbey before the
dissolution of the monasteries by Henry V111"
Queen Liz gave the area of land 'Arwystli' (Llandinam, Trefeglwys,
Llanidloes, Llangurig, Llanwnog and Carno) to the Earl of Leicester in
1572 and he granted the lands to various tenants.
Gwyneth goes on to say " There is evidence that the Earl of Leicester
provided incentives to Englishmen to move into Montgomeryshire in the
period 1572-1580.
she also mentions that the Ashton pedigree goes back to Derbyshire and
the article by Murray Chapman in the 'Montgomery collections' Volume 87,
1999 and tells of the migration into Montgomery in the reign of
Elizabeth 1.

Dear All
I have been doing some work on Gibraltar censuses yesterday & found an ASHTON
family in Gib as early as 1777. The appear on the 1791 census as
Joseph 64
Elizabeth 50 wife
Francis 38 son
Joseph 36 son
Joseph & Elizabeth were born in Britain - no details of where. I just
wondered whether the members of this List who are researching ASHTONS know if
any of
their people went to Gibraltar.
PS - for Alison Bryan - did you get the Will transcript I sent you?
Best regards, Ruth
