Hello Dennis,
Sorry not to have replied until now but I have had a problem
with Outlook Express.
There are a few possibilities for William in the 1861 census -
but none that place him with Richard - so it is difficult to be
sure. His occupation from 1871 census onwards is given as
a shoemaker. He married for apparently the first time in 1868
(stated as bachelor on certificate) to a widow, Anne Milnes
(formerly Evans). He married under the name, Hamer but by
the census of 1871 the family name has changed to Hammonds
and his eldest son (born 1869) is registered as Hammonds.
My husband's ancestor is his youngest son, Richard - born
1872- and registered as Hammonds. However from the census
of 1891 onwards Richard describes himself as Hamer. This is
the name he uses on his marriage certificate and his own children
are Hamers. It was known in the family that this name change
occurred but no-one knows why.
I'm very grateful for any help you can offer.
Rina

Subject: Re: [POWYS] William HAMER 1841 look-up
Hi Rena,
Neither father is named Richard, but Thomas Hamer,40, and wife Mary, 35,
at
Stoney Park, Nantmel, have a son called Richard aged 12, and 7 other
children.
His place is much nearer to Llandegley than Edward and Margaret Hamer in
St.
Harmon, north of Rhayader. A widow Margaret Davies aged 75 (mil ?) lived
with
them.
Is William on the 1861 census please? Llandegley comes under Cefnllys by
1851, but he is not at Llandegley in my 1851 book.
There was in 1861 a William Hamer, 26, at Achydiol, Nantmel , son of
Susan,
60, a widow and Farmer of 160 acres.
I will look further asap, Dennis
