Hi Lizzie,
I've been side-tracked for nearly a week by my brother's visit and am
sorry to be so tardy in responding to this fascinating discovery of your
'Dicko', 25 year old son of Richard HUMPHREYS and Elizabeth (nee ASHTON)
living in 1881 at 65 Alderney St, Pimlico, London - in the same area as the
birthplace of my grandmother, Maglona Ashton, as described on the 1891
census when she was aged 9 and living with her father at 12, St.Peters
Residence, Westminster. I wonder if Dicko helped his young cousin, 21 year
old Daniel Ashton to find Jane & Ann Jones of Llanbrynmair to help care for
baby Maglona?
If Maglona was born in Pimlico on 31 Dec.1881, perhaps her mother was
living there on the census date, Sun/Mon. 3/4th April 1881?
Might her mother have been another Maglona from Machynlleth, such as the
one mentioned on this list last 12th Sep.04 by Jo in Shropshire:
"Have you discounted she may be the dau of Maglona Lewis, 17 in 1881 and
working in London for the Marquis of Abergavenny?
I only looked for Maglona on London disk A-L there may be more of them in
the City.
Maglona was the name of a camp from Roman or olden times, situate near
Machynlleth."
Just a thought:- did the Marquis of Abergavenny keep a house in Pimlico
in 1881?
Thanks for the thoughts!
cheers, Tony in White Rock, BC

Thanks to Tony Francis' emails which mentioned Richard ASHTON (20), and
Edward ASHTON (28) (about the same age as my Dicko) taking themselves off
to London to learn tailoring, I wondered if my Richard (Dicko) HUMPHREYS
did the same and hey presto!
So we have Richard (Dicko) HUMPHREYS (b 1855 Bontdolgadfan), son of
Richard HUMPHREYS and Elizabeth (nee ASHTON) listed in the 1881 census,
aged 25, living in London as a tailor. He is the only tailor lodging in
William Clifton's household at 65 Alderney Street (Pimlico, Westminster,
the heart of London) (RG11/0107 F63 p50).
It seems reasonable to assume that Dicko walked to work (don't suppose he
earned very much) so could anyone tell me whether there were any
tailoring businesses nearby his lodgings?
Dicko subsequently returned to Llanbrynmair to run his tailoring business
and by 1891 he is living at Gelli Dywyll Mills with his in-laws (Daniel
and Anne HOWELL), his wife, Sarah, and their 8 mo old daughter (Sallie but
baptised Sarah). They are all still living there in 1901, though Daniel
HOWELL is now widowed, and it seems that Sallie was to be their only child.
