Hi fellow listers
My family interests centre on the parishes of Berriew and Bettws Cedewain.
I continue to research 4 generations of Benjamin BROWNs 1740s-1860s (who
all married Elizabeths - surnamed JONES/ANDREW/LANGFORD/JONES). The
BROWN family were wheelwrights (in the 1800s at Tyn y Frith/Ffrydd in
Bettws) as well as sometimes also being innkeepers or farmers e.g. at
Llwyn y crwth, Berriew.
I am interested in Edward LANGFORD, farmer, of Llivior and his family.
I am particularly interested in Evan JONES, blacksmith, of Llandinam and
Bettws. He was also innkeeper at the Red Lion Inn, Bettws, 1830s-70s. I
have earlier asked for help in locating this inn - and I have very
recently through tithe maps discovered/confirmed he owned and occupied
(i.e. smithy and the Red Lion) the building in Bettws that would later
become the Bettws Post Office and I think is now a new business called
the Bull and Heifer inn.
I have just returned from my first ever trip to the UK (London) and got
as far as Glamorgan in South Wales but unfortunately didn't make it as
far as Berriew/Bettws/Welshpool. However, I did spend 1 & 1/2 days at
the National Archives at Kew, London - mainly researching 1840 tithe
apportionments and manhandling the associated tithe maps (some were
huge!!). Non-flash photography was allowed - so if any of you think I
may have captured something of interest for you on the Berriew or Bettws
tithe maps, please let me know.
regards, Pamela
