Hello Malcolm,
I once used FTM but when Family Historian first came out in 2002 I switched
over and have never regretted the decision. Family Historian is now in
version 5.0.
It has an extensive user group website on
http://www.fhug.org.uk and an
active RootsWeb mailing list: family-historian-users(a)rootsweb.com
Simon Orde, the creator of Family Historian, is an active member of the user
group and responds to requests for the addition of new features.
Family Historian stores its data in strict GEDCOM 5 format and can import
GEDCOM files. It will even handle the non-standard GEDCOM output from other
programs such as FTM.
Find out more on the Family Historian website:
http://www.family-historian.co.uk/
I've used this British-made program for over 10 years and thoroughly
recommend it.
I should make clear that I have no connection, commercial or otherwise, with
Calico Pie, the company that produces Family Historian.
Kind regards,
John

Subject: [POWYS] Recommendations for FH software?
Hi All,
My family history work has been on the back burner for some years
now, and my Family Tree Maker software was somewhat aged before that
point. I think it was the first version on CD.
Having recently been sent a large Gedcom, I rather feel that the time
has come for an update. I note that FTM is still going strong, with
several versions to choose from, and would be interested in any comments.
Should I stay with FTM (and which version should I consider), or
there something much better now?
I will have a need to import the old files, I suspect that the
current version may not open the old file format, but would welcome
suggestions if anyone has tried it.
Cheers
Malcolm
