Your best source may be the evidence of the Royal Commission into the State
of Education in Wales 1847 (other wise known as Brad y Llyfrau Gleision,
the Treachery of the Blue Books - not sure of the English phrase but can
explain more if you want) which lists and describes schools through Wales.
There were 3 volumes in all, if I remember rightly, covering various areas
of Wales. It could well be that there were Dame Schools locally or ones run
by a local schoolmaster which wouldn't be listed anywhere else, especially
as they came and went. 1847 is near enough 1851 to be useful. Having said
that, 14 is quite old to be in such a school in 1851 so maybe it would be
worth looking a bit wider area.
Sorry I don't have any local knowledge to help.
I am sometimes suspicious of the description of children as scholars on
censuses, especially earlier ones. I have a feeling that there was a
guidance for the enumerator in some censuses that all children between one
age and another should be described as scholars, regardless of whether they
actually went to school or not.
It would be interesting to know what you find out.

Subject: [POWYS] Cilieni School
Hello All,
My great great grandfather John Price was 14 years old when the 1851 census
was taken and is listed as a scholar. He was living with his parents at a
farm called Lan-Fraith. This little farm is situated on the banks of the
Cilieni River. Some of the nearest farms are the Gythane, Aber-Cyrnog and
Tirbach.
Can anyone tell me if the Cilieni school was operating in 1851? I have
searched the books I have access too and I have done a goggle search without
any luck. I see Powys archives have records for the school beginning in
1882.
I have a copy of the 1900 ordnance survey map and I see a school listed
about a mile to the west of Lan-Fraith farm. Is this Cilieni school?
I do appreciate all the help that has been giving to me in the past!!!
Kind Regards
Robert Price
