Roger -
I have a friend who is a Welsh speaker, and she can translate for you. If
you will send me your e-mail address, I will forward it to her so she can
communicate with you directly.

Subject: [POWYS] Translation attempt
Dear Listers.
Would you please be able to correct and translate some of the below text
which I have translated literally rather than grammatically, given too many
years away from "yr hen iaith", two words in particular have me foxed as no
on-line dictionary can suggest a translation, I think the text is written by
a religious hand as it comes from a book "The History of the Welsh
Independent Churches" and was written (in Welsh) in 1871
Many thanks
Roger M Evans
DAVID JONES. Ganwyd ef yn Nghilcenin, Mai 18fed, 1800. Pan yn ddeuddeg oed
derbyniwyd ef yn aelod o'r eglwys yn y lle ; ac wedi dechreu pregethu aeth
i'r Athrofa, dan ofal ei weinidog, Dr. Phillips, Neuaddlwyd. Urddwyd ef yn
Nghapel Sul, Cydweli, Mai 18fed, 1824. Nid oedd yr achos yn gryf, ac fel yr
oedd ei deulu yn cynyddu bu raid iddo ymafael mewn rhyw bethau eraill er
cael rhyw gymhorth at eu, ac yr oedd hyny yn effeithio yn anffafriol ar ei
weinidogaeth. Ond er y cwbl cryfhaodd yr achos, ac yn 1831 bu raid
ail-adeiladu a helaethu y capel. Yr oedd yn ddyn synwyrol a deallgar, o
dymer heddychol, ac o ddawn melus. Nid oedd ynddo lawer o wroldeb cyhoeddus,
a buasai yn well iddo ef ac i'r achos pe buasai yn y deng-mlynedd-ar-hugain
olaf o'i fywyd wedi yfed yn helaethach o ysbryd diwygiadol a deffroadol ei
oes ; ond yr oedd yn barchus gan bawb, a theimlid chwithdod ar ei ol yn y
dref lle y llafuriodd are 43 mlynedd. Tarawyd of gan ergyd o'r parlys, fel y
bu yn fud am y chwe' mis olaf o'i fywyd ; a bu farw Gorphenaf 23ain, 1867,
yn 67 oed. Claddwyd ef yn mynwent y capel; a gosododd yr eglwys faen
coffadwriaeth hardd ar ei fedd.
DAVID JONES . He was born in Cilcennin , May 18, 1800 . When he was twelve
he was elected member of the church there , and began to preach he went to
the Institute , by his minister , Dr . Phillips , Neuaddlwyd . He was an
Orderly in the Chapel Sunday , Kidwelly , May 18, 1824 . ""The cause was
not strong, and so in order to increase his congregation he had to seize
other opportunities in order to assist with their subsistence , and this
affected unfavourably his ministry.. . But despite everything he
strengthened the cause , and in 1831 it was necessary to rebuild and enlarge
the chapel . He was a (? synwyrol?) man prudent , peaceable temper , and
sweet nature . He had a lot of courage in public , and would be better for
him and the cause if it had in the ten - twenty- years of his life finally
has a greater consumption of reformist spirit and (?deffroadol?) his life
but he was respected by all, and felt embarrassment after him in the town
where he laboured are 43 years . He was struck by a seizure , as he was
speechless for the six last months of his life , and died on July 23 , 1867
, aged 67 . He was buried in the cemetery chapel , and the church installed
a beautiful memorial stone on his grave
