Can you tell us any more Daphne? Was it just the one name that was given
rather than two? What was your grandfather's name? What period are we
talking about? Where?
If only one name there could be several explanations:
- he didn't know his father's surname
- it was the same as his own
- the registrar got interrupted whilst writing the certificate and forgot to
complete it
Without knowing more background I would tend to think it's a Christian name,
but John can also be a surname.
