Well that seems a pity to me, as I don't like undetected family history
mysteries. I *want* to find out more. If your father gave his grandfather's
name and you know where he came from, couldn't you discover more about
grandfather's family?
My best wishes, Jill

Hello Rhian
It is reputed he ran away from home and changed his name Having just
re-examined the certificate, he did give the full name.
Sorry for the mistake.
Unable to prove who he was really was, I am unable to go any further.
Daphne

Can you tell us any more Daphne? Was it just the one name that was
given
rather than two? What was your grandfather's name? What period are we
talking about? Where?
If only one name there could be several explanations:
- he didn't know his father's surname
- it was the same as his own
- the registrar got interrupted whilst writing the certificate and forgot
to
complete it
Without knowing more background I would tend to think it's a Christian
name,
but John can also be a surname.
Rhian
