My G G Grandfather was Richard Monnington. According to the 1861 census he
was living in Corve St, Ludlow and his place of birth cited as Norton,
Radnorshire, age puts his birth around 1821 as does his marriage
certificate. Richard joined the army in 1839.... His army records apparently
cite place of birth as Newton but I guess this could be a spelling mistake.
My problem is that I cannot locate Richard's parents. On Richard's marriage
certificate his father's name is cited as Richard, occupation as labourer
but his parents remain very elusive to me.

Dear Cindy,
The 1841 census shows an 80-year-old Anne MONNINGTON of independent means,
living in Church Street, Presteigne. She was not born in Radnorshire. She is
living with an 80-year-old shoemaker named John BOULTER. Census reference:
HO107/1457/6 Folio 15 Page 22.
Norton is less than two miles northwest of Presteigne.
No other MONNINGTONs are in the 1841 census index for Radnorshire.
Interestingly, the 1841 census for Herefordshire records a MONNINGTON family
living at *Newton*, (sub-district of Brampton Bryan; district of
Leintwardine). This farming family includes a Richard MONNINGTON, aged 1.
Census reference: HO107/428/24 Folio 6 Page 6. Newton is just five miles
northeast of Presteigne.
I do not think you should assume Richard's army records are in error in
stating his birthplace as Newton. Is it possible you are dealing with two
different individuals named Richard MONNINGTON - one born at Norton (RAD)
and one at Newton (HEF)?
Kind regards,
John
