John
I want to thank you for the perfect answer to my question. Now that I can
see the location on the map I can form a much better understanding of the
family associations and movements. I now have some homework to do. I most
certainly appreciate your assistance.

Dear Listers,
This week's 'Retrospective Images of Wales' webpages, just uploaded onto
my
website, include:
1. Scenes in the former mining village of Nantyglo in the county of
Monmouthshire (seven pictures). This feature was first shown on 'Images of
Wales' in February 1999.
2. The extensive Victorian Dan-y-graig Cemetery in Swansea, county of
Glamorgan (eight pictures). This feature was first shown on 'Images of
Wales' in August 1998.
As usual, these webpages will be on display for one week.
'Retrospective Images of Wales' is at
www.jlb2005.plus.com/walespic/retro/retro.htm
While there, take the time to explore my 'Webpage Archive' and make your
own Retrospective requests.
Kind regards,
John

Does anyone have information on the Cornwall Farm stated to be Llanfigan
(and a few other spellings)? I understand it is near Brecon. The David
PRITCHARD family was there circa 1841-1851. They are listed as (R)ichard
on
the 1841 Census. Thank you for any information.

===================
Dear John,
Cornwall Farm is situated near Pencelly in the parish of Llanfigan
(Llanfeugan) about five miles southeast of the town of Brecon. It is about
three fields away from the parish church, dedicated to St Meugan - see:
www.cpat.demon.co.uk/projects/longer/churches/brecon/16850.htm
You can call up a highly detailed (1:10,560-scale) late 19th century
(1891)
map of this area by going to the Old Maps website at
www.old-maps.co.uk/
On the main page, click on the illustration which states "Click here to
begin your search". On the search page which appears, enter 309200 and
224300 into the co-ordinates search fields and click the GO button
alongside.
When the small map appears, click on the "Enlarge Map" icon on the
right-hand tab. A highly detailed map of the area will open in a new
window,
centred on Cornwall Farm.
Cornwall Farm is also identified on the modern UK Ordnance Survey
'Landranger' 1:50,000-scale map (sheet 161). You can see the relevant
3-kilometre square section of this map at the Streetmaps website
www.streetmap.co.uk/
In the search section near the top of the Streetmaps homepage, select the
'OS Grid' option, enter 309200,224300 into the search field and click the
Search button. If necessary, change to the Landranger map format by
clicking
the area midway between the [+] and [-] zoom buttons at bottom right of
the
map.
You'll see Cornwall Farm identified by name in the centre square of the
map.
The entry in the 1881 census indicates that the farm then covered 80
acres.
Kind regards,
John

See

Record survival rates for Brecon in the early 1830s do not appear to be
good.
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/RdLeaflet.asp?sLeafletID=154
gives background information on assizes as they applied to England, but
Wales had its own Great Sessions until 1830

Dear Listers,
A partnership between The National Archive (TNA) at Kew, and S&N Genealogy
Supplies has made available on-line indexed images of non-parochial and
nonconformist registers 1567-1840 held in RG 4 and RG 5.
TNA holds 5,000 registers of a huge variety of nonconformist
congregations,
including Baptists, Methodists, Presbyterians, Protestant Dissenters
(known
as 'Dr Williams Library') and Independents. There are also registers from
a
small number of Roman Catholic communities.
Basic searching is free of charge, but there is a fee for advanced
searching
and to download images.
A press release announcing this new resource is at:
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documents/14sep2007.pdf
A guide to the relevant registers is at:
http://www.bmdregisters.co.uk/help/guide.htm
The online search engine is at:
http://www.bmdregisters.co.uk/
A brief trial search, for births/baptisms of 'Thomas Evans', revealed 78
matching entries dated 1718 through to 1837. Half of the entries were from
Wales. Considering the popularity of nonconformism in Wales, could be a
really useful resource
Kind regards,
John
