Marion,
Ensign is a US Navy rank, and is their equivalent to midshipman. So perhaps
you could try the records for the Australian Navy, probably held in Canberra
! Just an idea

I only have my grandfather's memory to rely on as far as the boy's name
was
concerned.
He was said to be "an ensign/midshipman" and died when his ship was
torpedoed.
His age is a worry!
My grandfather came to Australia in 1911 and my father and his step-mother
in 1913.
I have no idea who supplied the family news.
