Subject: Re: [POWYS] Sailing to Canada from Wales in 1888
Hi John, Carol, Alison and Carrol,
Thank you for your responses to my email. Thomas lived on a smallholding of
26 acres in the small parish of Llangurig before moving south where he was
employed in a steel works in Merthyr Tydfil at some period between 1871 and
1881. He left for Canada and arrived in 1888 in the Kamloops area to work
on the Douglas Lake Cattle Ranch. There would have been sheep on the farm
in Wales so it would have been completely different although of course he
would have been working in the open air which he would have missed when
working in the steel works.
Thomas became a foreman on the ranch, a position he held for many years
before leaving in April 1912 to go into partnership with a friend and buying
the Northern Transfer Company. Sadly Thomas had his leg amputated in the
August and died in the October age 52 years, he never married.
I wonder how Thomas came to hear about the job at the Douglas Lake Ranch as
I am sure that he wouldn't have travelled all the that way without some idea
of what he was going to do. The journey in Canada would have been easier
than in the past before the railway as it had been opened a couple of years
earlier.
Thank you for the website addresses, they will keep me busy however the
"ancestors on board" one goes from 1890-1960 so doesn't cover the year
Thomas left Wales. I may be able, however to look at sailings to give me an
idea where he was likely to have sailed from and to
I have Thomas' death record and also his entry on the 1901 Census where he
was living in the Yale & Cariboo District however I have been unable to find
him in 1911. Are there any other censuses available for searching on line?
Thanks again for your help.
Regards,
Margaret H

Your ancestor was a smart man to head to Kamloops, a beautiful area. I
believe all the records that remain are in Ottawa. There were several
collecting points along the way up the St Lawrence. Regardless, I have
heard
that many of the ship documents to Canada were lost in a fire but I
would
be
looking in Ottawa if I were you. Best of luck.
John

Hi everyone,
Thomas Jones, one of my ancestors left Wales about 1888 to sail to Canada.
He was born in Llangurig, Montgomeryshire but I think I have found him
working as an "Iron baller" and lodging in Merthyr Tydfil in 1881. I am
hoping someone can tell me from which port he would be likely to have
sailed
and also where he would disembark on arrival in Canada. His final
destination was the Kamloops area of British Columbia and I will be
grateful
for any help and suggestions.
Regards,
Margaret Harvey
