Hi Alison et al,
Thanks for your two emails, firstly I have subscribed to the British
Columbia list and received some very interesting information and suggestions
however it is even more quiet than this one and emails have come to a stop.
My husband Brian's grandfather was one of eight brothers and sisters and
three of the men emigrated to Canada and one to America around 1910. They
all worked in the wool mills in the Halifax, Yorkshire area and apparently
the Canadian Government sent representatives to promote their country by
offering eighty acres of land in Saskatchewan to anyone interested in
emigrating. Brian's great uncles and their families moved to the Tisdale
area and started building homesteads and working the land which was passed
into their ownership. They all stayed there and made successes of their
lives despite the fact that they had no experience of farming and no doubt
life in the early days must have been very difficult.
I was pleased you sent the "Ancestors on Board" website as it will be
interesting to discover which Welsh ports were used to sail to Canada in
1890.
Thanks again for your help.
Regards,
Margaret

Margaret
I wondered how my grandfather wound up in Canada. They used to
advertise for farm hands in local newspapers, at least at the time my
g/father migrated there. Someone on one of the Canadian lists kindly
posted me an example advert ... I really have no idea where it is at
this moment (will try looking in my filing cabinet later - if find
will scan).
1911 Canadian census - think you need a specific address?
Sorry for the dead end suggestion re Ancestors on Board - should read
the website more carefully.
