Hi Ian and others
I was brought up in the present parish of Gwyddelwern, and had thought of
Cynwyd as being part of the parish of Llangar. However I knew that in
earlier times the parish was larger. So your email prompted me to do some
browsing and it seems from
https://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/MER/Gwyddelwern (and
other sites) that until 1854 there was a detached part of the parish known
as 'Uwchafon' that that included Cynwyd on the far side of the river Dee.
*The ancient parish was divided into three divisions, each made up of
several townships:*
- *Cwm: Maes Gwyn; Maes Gamedd; Bonyronn & Trebach; Meiarth & Aelhaiarn*
- *Uwchmynydd: Bodgynfel & Clegir*
- *Uwchafon: Cynwyd Fawr; Cynwyd Fechan; Perseithydd & Bodheulog.*
*The Uwchafon division was detached from the rest of the parish. In 1854
the townships of Cynwyd Fawr, Cynwyd Fechan and Bodheulog were transferred
to the parish of Llangar. In 1864 the township of Persaethydd was
transferred to the new parish of Llawr y Betws, togther with the townships
of Llawr y Betws (from the parish of Llanfor) and Nantffreiar (from the
parish of Llandderfel).. *
So sharing this for information
Best wishes
Martin

My Griffiths family come from Cynwyd, Gwyddelwern, near Corwen. They

Edwards’s later census states he was born in Tregynon Montgomeryshire, but
I am intrigued by a series of baptisms on Familysearch for a family
including an Edward Griffiths baptised 1810 in Oswestry.
I haven’t delved deeply enough into this side yet but posting in case
anyone is interested, might have suggestions or is connected.
I am a longstanding member of Gwynedd FHS.
