Hi Norma,
I did a similar trip back in April 2014 leaving from Melbourne, Australia.
I spent about 10 days in Breconshire and used the town of Brecon as my base,
staying in The Castle Hotel which was very good. I travelled from London to
Cardiff by train and then by bus to Brecon. I then hired a car so that I
could go to the various farms where the Price family lived in the mid
1800's. Before I left Australia, I made all hotel reservations on
Booking.com and train journeys on the rail website. This worked out very
well. The public transport system in the UK is excellent.
In your case, the area of interest is to the east of Brecon, so Crickhowell
or Abergavenny may be the better places to stay, both of which have
accommodation on the websites such as
Booking.com or Trivago. With some
internet research, you should be able to determine the best way to get there
from London.
While planning my trip, I wrote to the current owners of the various farms
that I wanted to visit and had replies from all of them offering to show me
around. The secret to a successful trip is to do a lot of planning and
booking well before you leave.
I hope that the above is of some help to you and I would be pleased to
answer any other questions that you may have.
Have a great trip.
Regards,
Malcolm Price

Dear Norma
Cardiff is much closer to Crickhowell and Llanelly, Brecknockshire than
Swansea and Abergavenny is probably the closest railway station. The public
transport journey planner website for Wales is
https://www.traveline.cymru/ which
I hope you'll find helpful. I live in North Wales a long way from that
area, so hopefully there are people her much more local to that area than
me to advise on the area and public transport there.
Best wishes
Martin

Hello,
I hope I'm using the correct address to send this query.
I'm in the USA, beginning to do some very preliminary thinking about a
trip to UK in 2020 or 2021. I have ancestors who were from the Llanelly,
Breconshire area. Their birth certificates say Crickhowells. It would be
fun to see the area where they lived, but I have no idea of the logistics
of doing so.
If I travel to Swansea or Cardiff, is there good public transportation
(train or bus) to the Llanelly, Brecs area? Once I get to the vicinity,
is
there lodging available?
I'm reluctant to deal with driving on the "other" side of the road!
Any insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!
