There seems to be a quite widespread misunderstanding about how the email reply
system works. The details depend on how you are replying, but they all use the
header information, which my email client (Pegasus mail) displays in full and
allows me a wide choice of options.
The headers show the "From" field as [name of sender] via powys(a)rootsweb.com,
the "To" field (in this case) as "John Ball"
<john(a)jlb2011.co.uk>,
<powys(a)rootsweb.com>, the "cc field" (in this case empty) and the
"Send reply
to" field as Clive Gardener <clive-gardener(a)tiscali.co.uk>, powys(a)rootsweb.com.
The options also offer a "Sender" field which contains
powys-bounces(a)rootsweb.com, which is not displayed in the standard message
headers when reading the message normally.
I can select any or all or any combination of those options, and then when
composing the message I can go to the new "To" field and modify it. In this
message I selected the "Send reply to" field but then modified the message by
deleting the first address, so sending it just to the list.
Email systems offering a "Reply all" option presumably send it to both the
"From" address and the "Send reply to" address, which would, for this
list,
send the message to the list twice and also direct to the original sender (who
would then receive three copies).

Hi All
In selecting 'Reply All', to add to John's e-mail, sent earlier today,
I've
noticed that the address powys(a)rootsweb.com has pasted itself up twice . . . as
if there might be a hidden or inadvertent duplicate addressee created behind the
scenes by some software 'glitch'. So, for the purpose of finding out how these
duplicate e-mails are being generated and turning up, I've left the duplicate
entries in place for the benefit of the 'properties' section of the e-mail.
At the present time I've received:
Rhian Williams via 31/8 21:28 (received 21:31)
Change of List Admin 4 copies
Megan Roberts via 2/9 00:24 (received 00:30 & 00:31)
Llanwyddelan 2 copies
Graham Williams (gw55fh) via 2/9 20:33 (received 20:36 & 20:37)
multiple copies of the same email 2 copies
Whereas John's e-mail (to which I'm replying), like Rhian's introductory
e-mail, only showed one powys(a)rootsweb.com address entry on the original
header (but two after I selected 'Reply All', which goes for Rhian's as
well), both Megan's and Graham's incoming e-mails show two rootsweb address
entries in their headers.
Because when I selected 'Reply All' the powys address pasted itself up
twice, automatically, you may all be receiving two copies of this e-mail - with
both addresses showing in lower case letters. Except, I've just saved, closed
and reopened the draft of the e-mail and, in the process, the second powys
address has disappeared . . . If I'd sent the e-mail before closing a saved
version then there would have been two powys addresses in the header, but now I
can only see one!
However, for Megan's incoming e-mail the first appearence of the rootsweb
address has 'POWYS' in capitals. Whereas for Graham's incoming e-mail the
second appearance of the rootsweb address has 'POWYS' in capitals.
I hope this helps with working out what is happening!
Best regards
Clive Gardener
