Dear John (Hopkins)
You're quite right - they are two different places!
If anyone can guess where the cottage is located then I shall be going
somewhere in six days time where I should be able to trace the name of the
occupants during the period to which some of the artefacts belong.
If the owner(s)/occupier(s) died without leaving relatives or a will, or
their estate was tied up by legal proceedings and the solicitor concerned
also died around the same time, perhaps having stored the deeds safely away
somewhere, then the property could have ended up being left in limbo.
More likely is that a living person has abandoned the cottage in its exact
state at a certain moment in time, for personal historical reasons - a
little like Miss Havisham's house in Charles Dickens' 'Great
Expectations',
abandoned at the moment of her jilted wedding - and this person could well
still be alive somewhere in the UK yet unable to get to the place:
Anyway, if anyone on the list knows where the cottage is located, but
doesn't know the name(s) of the missing occupant(s), drop me a line and I'll
do some research next Tuesday and post the results (but not the address)
here on the list . . .
Best regards
Clive Gardener

Dear Martin and John
Martin, thank you for posting the url for the Daily Mail article - that
was
such an interesting read. I remember a house that us kids used to get into
in my home town in NZ (quite illegal of course), and though it was
centuries
younger than the Welsh cottage, it was still fascinating because lots of
personal belongings were scattered around leaving the impression it was
still lived in. It used to scare us silly...
John, with all due respect, I think you and the Daily Mail are talking
about
two different houses. My wife and I saw the Tumbledown Cottage when we
were
on my first trip to Britain in 2004 - we had been to the Forest of Dean
and
Hay on Wye, and were wending our way through Powys travelling north
looking
at places associated with my family roots. The road we were on twisted
back
and forth across the Welsh/English border. We were so entranced when we
came
across "The Tumbledown Cottage" I had to stop and take a photograph, and
nearly got killed when returning to our car. From memory the house is
either
on a bend, or nearby, and the vehicle and I didn't see each other until
almost too late.
If you look at the architectural style, building materials, and topography
of the two houses (the lay of the land around both houses are completely
different), I think you will agree that the Daily Mail cottage in Wales,
and
"yours" in Willersley are two different buildings. Fortunately, the error
has led to us reading two interesting stories instead of one!
Cheers
John

Dear Martin,
The deserted house is "The Old Crow" and is situated in England - at
Willersley, Herefordshire, just a few miles from the Welsh border.
Over the past two years I have conducted extensive research into the
history
of the building and its various occupants. On my website, I have created a
lengthy webpage setting out the results of my research, under the title
"The
Tumbledown Cottage":
www.jlb2011.co.uk/specials/index.htm
My webpage includes the latest news on the fate of the building, now in
the
hands of a developer/restorer.
Kind regards,
John

The Daily Mail has an article on a deserted house that has been 'found' in
mid-Wales though no location given.
Just hope that it is not trashed or all stolen, the contents should really
be acquired by a museum.
