Thank you Mike for letting us know about the book Hope and Heartbreak. I ordered it right
away from Amazon and it arrived today. I look forward to some nice weather when I can sit
outside and enjoy it in peace!
Thanks again.
Ann.

Hello Darlene.
Bit of a surprise (but a pleasant one) to find you on this list.
Stallards get everywhere!
Fred Stallard married my Nain (Welsh for grandmother) who was Rose
Jones, born in Welshpool and whose parents John and Ann Jones (nee
Jones) were born in Llanfair Caereinion and Llanwyddelan respectively.
I'm focussing hard on Ann and John at present and trying to put some
flesh on the bones of their social history but I'm finding it hard
going. They were both `menial/servant/farm labouring` stock and
written social history of ordinary people from that area seems to be
scarce indeed. For instance I got a really good book recently, `Hope
and Heartbreak,` A Social History of Wales and the Welsh, 1776 -
1871. Smashing book, excellently researched and with numerous
examples from courts records etc., and some of the content harrowing
and lurid recording grindingly hard times. But - plenty of content
about N Wales, S Wales and West Wales - very little about the area
around Welshpool.
And that area, as I discovered first hand in March, is very beautiful
but subtly different from the rest of Wales in its topography. I
suspect the social history is also different in many respects with
the cross-border connections and relationships with Shropshire.
I visited the Montgomeryshire Genealogical Society offices but what
they could offer was limited (they don't really deal in family social
history as such). One excellent source I came across in Welshpool
library though was the Powysland Club (an archeological society)
records which runs to many hard back volumes stretching over about
three centuries. They are really collections of members' papers and
essays over the years but they provide a real local perspective. The
problem is that they're not available in Libraries here in Norfolk or
Suffolk and I suspect it would cost a fortune for the libraries to
obtain them on request so the only practical way to research them is
to go to Welshpool. I wish they were online.
I'm planning a trip to the National Library of Wales at the end of
June (combining it with a mental health conference in Aberystwyth on
27th) to see what I can rake up there. If there's anything you'd like
me to have a gander at, let me know.
Heddwch
Mike.
