Hello AJ,
My intent in writing to the Parish of St Elli was to see if there would be some kind soul
in that parish to look in the churchyard for a few names. I am searching for burials. As a
volunteer with a genealogy group called RAOGK (Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness) I
look up obituaries and naturalization papers and cemetery information in the county where
I live in upstate NY - all for free. This is a tremendous group and saves people a lot of
money when it comes to paying for what is just a five minute drive to some part of town
for me. When I contacted a church in Western Pennsylvania the minister put me in touch
with a kind parishioner who helped me find the grave of my great grandmother.
Are there any such groups in Wales?
In the meantime, if anyone out there is searching for someone in the USA, give RAOGK a
try.
Regards,
Tomi

One can check such addresses from the Church in Wales database at
http://www.churchinwales.org.uk/rb/church.php. Typing the dedication "St
Elli" into the box will offer you two different places, from which you can
select as your first choice St Elli or St Ellyw, Gilwern, in the parish of
Llanelli. Clicking on the name of the parish will then reveal the address
of the current vicar.
However, this begs the question of exactly why you wish to write to the
church in the first place (assuming that it has something to do with
genealogy). If it has anything to do with access to older registers, you
should initially be enquiring from the county record office - not from the
church. The book "Parish Registers of Wales" and the web page at
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/BRE/Llanelli/index.html both indicate that
the early registers are deposited with the Gwent Record Office
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/archon/searches/locresult_details.asp?....
When genealogical enquiries are sent direct to the churches (which still
happens all too frequently), it tends merely to cause extra work for the
incumbent, and unnecessary delay for the correspondent (assuming that they
ever receive any reply at all).
