MERTHYR
WAGES IN THE IRON TRADE In the course of the last week, several meetings
were held by the Dowlais workmen on the subject of an advance of wages, in
consequence of the improved state of the iron trade. On Tuesday evening a
deputation of the men had a conference with the principal managers, in the
Dowlais schoolroom, where it was agreed that the present rates should
continue until the middle of the month of March, when a further advance is
to take place.
THE MINERS The men continue still uneasy for the want of more advance in
their wages. Coal is very scarce at the yards for the public, and at the
works. The colliers, it appears, expect better wages.
CARDIFF
COBREY ESTATE A few weeks ago we announced that our respected member, T.W.
BOOKER, Esq., had become the purchaser of this property, and at the time we
wrote we believe a contract in writing for the sale had been entered late by
all the parties interested in it. Before, however, the contract had been
formally approved by the Master in Chancery, we learn that some of the
parties connected with the sale entered into negotiation with R.M. PHILLIPS,
Esq., of Spitterfield, near Stratford-upon-Avon, who was induced to offer
more than Mr. BOOKER; and the Master, having both proposals before him,
considered he had no other alternative than to accept the highest offer.

the subject of supplying the town with gas, with an earnestness which bids

propositions for the formation of the company. It was proposed that Mr.
HORNSBY be appointed treasurer to the company, and that Mr. T.A. BALLARD be

persons gave in their names for a number of shares nearly one hundred were
