Hi Richard
They answered advertisements in the papers. My Somerset great grandfather
answered one from WD & HO Wills to come and work in Queensland Australia on
their tobacco farms.
There is one in the Cambrian 7 Mar 1840 to emigrate to Central America from
the Eastern Coast of Central America Commercial and Agricultural Company. It
says the company obtained a grant from the Government of the Federal States
of Central America of 15,000,000 acres of Virgin Lands lying between the
15th and 19th degrees of North latitude and 88 and 92 degrees West
longitude. It includes the seaport of Santo Tomas and it goes on to describe
the virtues of the land including minerals and richness of soil. The first
settlement is called Abbottsville and the voyage would take eight
weeks.....etc etc. I have seen others for Australia and I have a booklet
called "Information for people leaving Great Britain 1854"
The Australian Government ran various assisted immigration schemes right up
until the 1970s. They employed agents in various places in the UK to
organise the voyages.

Subject: [POWYS] Who arranged emmigration to N.America/Aus/NZ from Powys?
GRIFFITHS NEWELL RICHARDS DAVIES
Dear list,
What did local people do when they wanted to emmigrate?
The BROWN family in Livepool were captains, agents and owners of immigrat
ships.
It has always puzzled me why a Yorkshire sea captain would marry into a
strongly methodist Welsh family.
Recently it has occured to me that someone was acting in Wales as an
emmigration agent linking this area with Liverpool Likely to have very
strong Methodist connections.
eg GRIFFITHS NEWELL RICHARDS DAVIES.
Maybe Evan NEWELL later of Towyn then USAwas involved in arranging passage
I would be very interested in any thoughts etc
