Thank you Jo!
You've not only got him, but solved the riddle of when he came to Australia.
I can only find an "Edward" Sturkey who arrived on a ship from a Foreign port
(as opposed to a British one), not New Zealand, in 1864. Because of this, all I got from
the shipping records here was that he was an (A)dult and male. He was a cabinet maker, and
he did die in 1880. In 1881, his wife, whom he had married here in 1865, came back to
Australia, bringing her daughter (born in South Africa, apparently but impossibly in
1865)and their children. They are really odd though. There is no record of Ada Sturkey
(nee Gallagher) coming in the first time, and only 2 children have any records here. Edwin
jnr and Mary Eliza got married, Edwin to my relative, but Edwin jnr has no arrival
records. Australian records are usually pretty good, and very accessible, but this one has
me stumped.

Hello Teresa in Australia,
Is your EDWIN STURKEY who died in 1880, the one aged 39? If so would put
his birth at around 1841.
Whilst no Sturkey exact spellings show up on the IGI, England shows nine
Edwins with spellings Starkie/Starky.
Three Edwin but name Starkey registered around 1841, one being June quarter
1842, Ellesmere. (covers some Montgomeryshire think some Flint). Do you
think that deliberately for some reason, or erroneously in transcription,
his surname with an A could have become a surname with a U?
Leads to interesting findings, he shows as a cabin passenger in 1864 to New
Zealand, so thought he must be quite well off for a young cabinet maker.
Then realised Cabin Two in which he is listed, covers a fair number of
people, both sexes, so the ship cabin two may have been nearer what I think
of as steerage.
I have some directories covering Montgomeryshire, Shropshire, and will
sometime look for a cabinet maker but it means going through parishes
separately in the earlier directories, as fewer have sections covering
Occupations.
Even if this not your chap, hopefully it will be the Powys list detectives
chasing an intereting query.
Jo. In warming-up Shropshire.
