Dear Joy,
I have used the 1851 Montgomeryshire Census CD issued by the Powys FHS to
search for Pentre, the one you are interested in is in Llangurig Parish not
Llanidloes. I have included New House, Pentre as well and from the
reference numbers you will see that they were enumerated close together.
Pentre was a farm of 25 acres employing one labourer and it looks as if
there were two families living there. I have used a map in conjunction with
the census and this Pentre is close to the main road from Llanidloes to
Llangurig so from your previous correspondence I gather that it is the
correct one. Properties in Cwmbelan are also enumerated under Llangurig
Parish.

I use a Welsh/English dictionary when researching to discover the meaning of
property names because they can be descriptive however I see that "Pentre"
means village which is rather strange unless at one time there were several
dwellings and a church which seems unlikely. I have however just looked at
the 1881 Census and there are four occupied properties and two uninhabited
ones under the name of "Pentre Hamlet". The property in the 1851 Census is
close to the River Dulas which I think maybe more like a wide stream that
flows into the Severn at Llanidloes. I find that using an Explorer
Ordnance Survey 1:25000 scale map is useful when researching. I have only
been able to provide a little extra information unfortunately however I hope
it will be of interest.
Regards,
Margaret Harvey

Dear John,
I was able to go to the library to look at Ancestry, com this morning
but after more than 2 hours of wandering through 1851 Census, the
Llanidloes enumeration districts ,I eventually gave up. I found
Llangurig but could not find if I was getting close. Cwmbellan is not
mentioned in any of the descriptions of the enumeration districts. If
you have any other ideas I would appreciate it very much.

Joy
