Hello, All,
I wanted to chime in with the search for Powell connections. I
haven't posted mine to the list in
quite awhile, and thought it might be time to do so again. I'd be
thrilled if somebody has a connection,
and If anybody would be willing/able to search any records to take
this family back another generation, I'd be so grateful.
Maybe Welsh naming conventions will provide a clue.
My 2X great-grandmother was Elizabeth Powell, born about 1827 in or
near Llanelly, Breconshire. Her father was
William Powell. I don't know anything about her mother. She married
John Dent Davis/Davies, also born around 1827
in Llanelly, Breconshire. Have been unable to find their marriage.
Elizabeth and John had five children:
According to birth certificates, the first two were born in in
Cwmdu, GLAMORGANSHIRE. The family
had returned to Llanelly, Brecs by the time the last two were born.
David S., born 1856
John, born about 1858 (emigrated to USA with the family, but did
not live to adulthood)
Henry E, born 1861 (possibly spelled Henory)
Ann or Annie, born 1863
and Mary Pauline, born 1865.
I have the (US) death certificates for some of these people. William
Powell's indicates that his parents were Howell and Cecilia Powell,
but lists them only as from Wales. (Cannot put my hand on the death
cert just at the moment; may be remembering his mother's name
incorrectly. If somebody
thinks they might have a connection, I will gladly dig out the
certificate.)
The family emigrated from Wales to the US in 1868, settling first in
Kentucky, then after a short time, moving to Allegheny County PA.
At some point, Elizabeth's father joined them in the US. He and
Elizabeth and John are buried in the same cemetery
plot in Pittsburgh, PA. (I also have details about that which I can
share.)
Hopefully,
