Hello,
Instead of paying for a proxy server, here is one of several free
solutions to access iPlayer.
You will need to have the FireFox browser (
http://firefox.com). Then
install the FireFox add-on, FoxyProxy:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2464. Visit here for
configuration help where you can watch videos to see how to select a UK IP
address:
http://foxyproxy.mozdev.org/help.html. You may need to spend
some time at this help page before you understand how to configure
FoxyProxy. Repeating the first video helps. If a proxy server is too
slow or stops working, you can simply use another from several lists
you'll find by doing a google search for "proxy list".
By the way, the BBC monetizes their web present somewhat with advertising,
just as other program providers do. I also agree it would be wonderful
for the BBC and the U.K. to allow cultural content not available via any
other means abroad. Perhaps it is a logistics, or current policy,
problem.

Hey guys!
Well here's a couple of sites, the first I have used with great effect
[1]http://www.ukproxyserver.co.uk/
[
2]http://www.xroxy.com/proxy-country-GB.htm
And if you just wish to be able to grab UK shows via torrent then I
recommend
uknova.com who are probably the best of the expat torrent
hosts...and it's free!

Well now there's a revelation! I don't think that was available until
recently. Certainly before the iplayer anyway. It's not well advertised it
would seem.

hello all!
An interesting subject! As a Brit who lives in the US I
used
to have the same issues but when I wrote to the Beebs technical dept
they
kindly advised me to procure a UK based proxy server. I did and can
watch
whatever I wish on all UK web players plus there are sites for ex pats
where
u can download any of the UK shows for free! I regularly enjoy all the
shows over there so problem solved!

There have been suggestions that there should be some way of people
overseas to buy a licence to access iPlayer. If a subscription was needed
and you had to enter an ID and password then there would be a great danger
of that being extended to UK users once there was a charging structure in
place.
There would also be a constant battle to keep one step ahead of the
hackers with IDs being shared around. You could disable any ID used by
more than one person at the same time but that could happen accidentally
so there would be administrative costs in managing these accounts.
But I think that some educational, cultural or whatever programmes should
be made available to overseas users on iPlayer. Most of them would not be
watched by large numbers so there would be little extra bandwidth used. I
presume the BBC would be able to monitor what numbers from different areas
were watching the programmes so it could help overseas sales if they went
to a specialist TV channel overseas and told them that the programme had
already been watched by a significant number of people in that country so
there was an interest there.
At one time the government went to a lot of expense to promote British
culture overseas so what better way than a selection of programmes like
these being made on iPlayer.

Thank you for taking the time to express opinions that many of us feel.
I lived abroad for many years and longed for many BBC programs that were
nether sold to foreign services nor available through BBC World Services.
Now I'm back in UK for good I miss things from abroad too. Perhaps this
the area where pay to view should step in [small letters intentional]. If
national services all had a pay for view channel that made programs
available for Worldwide distribution everyone could be satisfied!
Naive, perhaps, expensive probably, but the price could be pitched to pay
for the service I'm sure!
