Hello Julie,
I have found as follows a transcription of the record for Mary using the
1841 Census CD issued by the Powys FHS:
Knighton Hundred
Township of Gollon in the Parish of Abbey Cwm-hir
PUGH, Stephen, 55, Bapt.Minister, Y, Brondre Fawr, f4/p1
PUGH, Edward, 20, Y, Brondre Fawr, f4/p1
PUGH, Stephen, 20, Y, Brondre Fawr, f4/p1
PUGH, Frances, 18, Y, Brondre Fawr, f4/p1
PUGH, Sarah, 14, Y, Brondre Fawr, f4/p1
PUGH, Mary, 13, Y, Brondre Fawr, f4/p1
PUGH, Price, 11, Y, Brondre Fawr, f4/p1
GEORGE, John, 25, M.S., Y, Brondre Fawr, f4/p1
SMITH, Richard, 20, M.S., Y, Brondre Fawr, f4/p1
GEORGE, Edward, 15, M.S., Y, Brondre Fawr, f4/p1
JONES, Martha, 65, F.S., No, Brondre Fawr, f4/p1
JONES, Mary, 25, F.S., No, Brondre Fawr, f4/p1
RALPH, Mary, 20, F.S., No, Brondre Fawr, f4/p1
WILLIAMS, David, 45, Ag. lab., No, Brondre Fawr, f4/p1
DAKINS, William, 14, M.S., Y, Brondre Fawr, f4/p1
Mary was employed as a "Female Servant" at Bondre Fawr the home of the
Reverend Stephen Pugh. One of the inhabitants was an "Agricultural
Labourer" so the land was being farmed as it is today. Descendants of
Stephen Pugh still live on the farm which is in Bwlch-y-Sarnau, Pantydwr.
The word "No" after Mary's name denotes that she wasn't born in
Radnorshire.
The age of those over sixteen are rounded down to 0 or 5 and you are
fortunate in that occupations are not always recorded.
I hope the above helps.
Regards,
Margaret Harvey

Subject: [POWYS] Ancestry Website - Place Name?
Hello,
I was wondering if someone can look at Ancestry.co.uk and look up a Mary
Ralph that was born circa 1818/1820 in St Harmon in the 1841 Census. I found
a Mary Ralph in Abbeycwmhir, but I can't make out the name of the census
place (residence) or her occupation. It looks like "Brondry ??" and as there
were people with different names in the same household, I'm wondering if it
was a castle or mansion type home.
Can anyone shed some light on this and perhaps her occupation?
Thanks,
Julie
