Dear Listers,
I have been asked by a Powys List member who uses Geocities to host her
websites whether the warning about closure could be a hoax.
Here is my reply:
--------------
I'm afraid the warning is genuine. Following the link:
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/geocities/geocities-05.html
will take you to the official announcement on the 'Yahoo! Help' webpage.
Furthermore, I believe that already, you can no longer use the FTP method
for uploading and downloading files to and from your existing Geocities
websites. I assume you have kept full copies of all your HTML files locally,
on your own computer or on a CD.
You will need to find a new, hopefully free, host for your websites.
Incidentally,
RootsWeb.com offers free personal webspace for
genealogy-related websites - see
http://accounts.rootsweb.ancestry.com/
The conditions imposed by RootsWeb are set out here:
http://accounts.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index.cgi?op=show&page=freagree...

Kind regards,
John

Subject: [POWYS] Closure of Geocities websites
Dear Listers,
The warning below is being circulated on some of the other RootsWeb
genealogy mailing lists.
If you know of anyone with a Geocities website, I'm sure they would
appreciate your letting them know.
--------------Quote begins-----------------
You may have heard that Geocities will be closing down later this year
(2009). There are many genealogy sites on Geocities, and sadly, many of
these sites may be lost if the webmasters don't move the sites to a new
location. Yahoo is not notifying anyone about this by e-mail and many
webmasters have not updated their sites in years, so--more likely than
not--are not even aware the pages they have posted will be lost.
You or someone you know may have genealogy information posted on a Geocities
site. USGenWeb & Rootsweb also have had links to Geocities sites. Please
help spread the word so genealogy websites won't be lost.
