I’m looking for information on the life of my great-great-grandfather, Abraham Powell,
who was born about 1800 in Radnorshire. He farmed at The Waun just north of
Bwlch-y-Sarnau.
He was not christened in the church at St Harmon, although his (possible) siblings John,
Mary and Thomas were (1786, 1788 and 1791). He died in 1879 and is buried at the Baptist
Chapel in Bwlch-y-Sarnau. This leads me to believe that his father (John b. 1759) became a
Baptist sometime in the early 1790s. This would coincide with the Powell family’s move
from Beili Coch farm to Prysgduon about that time.
It turns out that Prysgduon and The Waun are not much more than a stone’s throw from the
farm at Brondre Fawr where Stephen Pugh raised his family. Stephen Pugh was the Baptist
Minister at Bwlch-y-Sarnau I believe.
Regrettably, I have been unable to unearth any BMD records relating to the Chapel at
Bwlch-y-Sarnau. So, I’m beginning to look at secondary sources, starting with some history
of the Bwlch-y-Sarnau Chapel. I’ve found the title of a book which looks like it could
help me:
"The History of the Baptists in Radnorshire”, John Jones, 1859.
There appear to be few copies of this book in libraries world-wide. I’m in Canada and the
closest library I can find is in San Francisco. I’d rather not burden my local library
with a, probably expensive, inter-library loan. Not just yet, anyway. I’m wondering
whether any of the list members have this book and could answer a few questions for me.
There is a copy apparently in the library of the Radnorshire Society at Dolmynach House
in Rhayader. Unfortunately, I’m not a member.
Your help most appreciated.
