Hi John and list,
Whilst I think the concept is a good one I have a few concerns
1. The first is the level of funding a family run website can pour in
to what may become a very successful website. Site maintenance,
hosting, and security for the next 50 years at least for it to be
of use to family historians.
2. Business continuity being the other. It's a family venture. What
happens if the webmaster is taken sick? Who covers the breach?
3. The birthdays section and some other areas are also worrying in
terms of identity theft.
Perhaps I'm only thinking as a family historian. If the concept is a
"Flash in the Pan" for the internet and not as a long term resource then
my first two concerns are invalid. And the webs "Way Back Machine"
(Internet Archive) may provide some long term survival of the data,
providing the data bases are are not hidden. So perhaps, excluding
deaths and 'In Memorium', people should be wary about putting too much
data on.
So I say tread carefully and enjoy.
Mike
