Thanks Margaret, I have Claytons in WI, from my 1841 CLEATONS in
Montgomeryshire here in Wales, and also two ladies in LA . I never knew they
existed until I found them via a note I put on on Ancestry 6 years ago!!
Gilligan is an Irish name, that my wife relates to in Belmullet, Co Mayo
there!!
Best wishes, Dennis in RAD Powys, Mid Wales, UK, _dcleatond(a)aol.com_

Hi,
Yes, the family started out for a long time as SWANCOTT, but a story
came down through the family that there was a disagreement over a letter
that was misdirected, and afterward a part of the family began using the
Swancutt spelling. Samuel Swancutt and Elizabeth Bufton moved to
Staffordshire and ended up in West Bromwich. Their third child, our
Samuel,
married an Eliza Hall from somewhere near Handsworth, and they immediately
came to the United States in 1855. Some other members of the Swancutt
group
settled in Wisconsin and Iowa about the same time or shortly afterwards.
Another branch kept the Swancott spelling and settled around the New York
area.
Sorry for the late response--we have been very busy and somewhat
distracted.
