Transportation to Australia began when the "First Fleet" departed England in
1787 and established first colony in Sydney Cove, Port Jackson, New South Wales - January
26, 1788 ( now celebrated as Australia's National Day - "Australia Day".)
Transportation to N.S.W. ended in 1840, but continued to Tasmania (Van Diemen's Land)
until 1853. Hobarton in V.D.L. was Australia's second colony, established in 1804; an
earlier 1803 site was unsuitable and relocated to Sullivan's Cove - present-day,
Hobart.
TRANSPORTATION TO WESTERN AUSTRALIA
First Convict Transport arrived at Fremantle, WA in June 1850. Over the next 18 years, a
total of 9,668 Convicts - ALL MALE were sent to WA.
Transportation ended completely on January 10,1868 - 80 years to the month since it
commenced with arrival of First Fleet in Sydney in 1788.
Hope this is helpful to all those pondering possible Convict ancestry.
STEVE TROW - sorry, absolutely no transportation to any Australian colony at that time.
Kind regards,
Dawn Stanton (Tasmania)
