Hello listers
Is anyone on the list interested in the Hughes family of Cwmcarnedd,
Llanbrynmair?
With the help of the Cambrian Newspaper index pointed out by Dawn Stanton -
thanks Dawn - I think I have found the progress of Richard Hughes (b. 1817,
son of Edward Hughes 1783-1862) of Cwmcarnedd Isa through the censuses. If I
am right he became a wealthy tin-plate manufacturer in Swansea. His daughter
Mary Elizabeth Ann Hughes married Sir John Williams, a court physician who
made very important donations to the National Library of Wales in its early
days. (A book, Uncle Jack, by one of his descendants, Tony Williams, has
accused him of being Jack the Ripper, but reviewers are underwhelmed by his
arguments.)
But if I am right about Richard Hughes of Cwmcarnedd Isaf, who are the
brother Richard (born abt 1818) and John (born abt 1823) Hughes who are
farming Cwmcarnedd Uchaf in the 1841-1881 censuses? They are almost
certainly of the same family and likely to be the grandsons of Richard
Hughes (1734-1815) of Cwmcarnedd Uchaf, but I cannot find baptismal records
to link them back. This Richard left a will mentioning his oldest son
William, implying that he had younger unnamed sons. His son William had died
in 1806 - too early to be the father of brothers Richard and John. Any
baptism records are likely to non-conformist.
