Thanks to all of you who responded to the mysteries raised by the
marriage certificate
I received, which showed the wife's father's name as different from
what I had provided
to the registry office.
When I emailed the registry office to ask about the discrepancy, their
response was
very apologetic, and they told me I could return the certificate, and
they would refund
everything including the postage I paid to return it; or I could keep
the certificate and
they would refund only the postage they charged to airmail the
certificate to me. Those
choices seemed more than fair, and very gracious.
Eliz, I'll look at the Pittburgh directory link you sent, which I had
never seen before.
And thanks to both you and Shirley for the various bits of information
about puddlers.
Sounds like it was very hard work, and the people who did it would be
absolutely astonished to see
what is done today by automation!
I think my next step with this Powell-Davis/Davies marriage mystery is
to dig into
the paperwork I already have. I'm certain that there is a William
Powell buried in the
same cemetery plot -- with the same ownership of the entire plot -- as
Elizabeth Powell Davis
and John Davis. What I don't know is if any of the paperwork
"officially" identifies William
as Elizabeth's father, or if that was an assumption at some point.
It has also been suggested that I try to locate more information about
the John Powell listed
on the certificate as father of Elizabeth. Maybe I can find a
household in Wales where he
is listed with his family.
Thanks again.
