If you are referring to US copyright, this 100 yr old rule may not be true.
My understanding is that IF the book wasn't reprinted that would be
correct. If someone found a book in the library, etc. and the copyright
was that old, if doesn't mean that some publisher like the Genealogical
Publishing Company of Balitmore did NOT do a reprint. If they did, all the
present-day copyrights apply.
I could be wrong, and if you know I am, please let me know.....
