I guess this is the time of year people are posting their interests. So
I will post my greatest heart's desire, the name of the mother of my
ggrandmother MARY JANE WILLIAMS (1852-1905).
I know that her father was named JOHN WILLIAMS, master mariner at the
time of Mary Jane Williams' marriage in Nov. 1874. He seems to be alive
but the father of the groom (GEORGE MORGAN HUGHES[1840-1916]) is also
shown as a master mariner, but deceased. They were married according to
the rites of the Calvinistic Methodist faith, but later were
Congregationalists in Amlwch.
This couple lived in Amlwch, Anglesey, at the time of their marriage and
continued to live there until around the turn of the century, when they
moved to Liverpool. The 1881 Amlwch census report shows Mary Jane and
the rest of the household as having been born in Amlwch. However, the
1891 census shows her birthplace as Liverpool, while everyone else had
been born in Amlwch. I figure for this census she must have answered for
herself, but I may be incorrect.
The only clues I have for the mother's name are the daughters of Mary
Jane, in order of birth: Anne Mary (b.1879), married Tom Williams,
Welsh; Hannah (b.1881), married Alfred Butler, English; Eleanor
(b.1885--my grandmother); Catharine Gertrude (b.1888), married Owen Parry
Williams in England; Eliza Myfanwy (b.1889) married Robert Marks,
English; Emily Maud (b.1891) married Tom Nuttall.
It would appear that either Anne or Mary was the name of her mother; Anne
was also the name of her husband's mother, so perhaps this is a
combination naming for the first girl. There are a lot of Mary Jane
Williams in the UK with a John Williams for a father, and I am hoping
this listing will tap into someone else's research. Since her father was
a seaman, I suppose she could have been born anywhere in the UK. I have
searched all of the Amlwch census reports available to me for a John
Williams, seaman, with a daughter named Mary or Mary Jane. None exactly
fit the age she would have been, and I can't narrow it down. The same
with the memorial inscriptions for St. Eleth's in Amlwch--a lot of John
Williams but none that I would expect to be mine. Some one has suggested
that he might be in the town cemetery if he died after St. Eleth's was
filled up, but I don't know what the town cemetery is called. I can't
find the non-conformist chapel they would have attended in Amlwch.
